Budget airline for Pompey's flight to Burnley

Pompey players will be taking budget airline Flybe for their match this Saturday with Burnley.

The club is desperate to cut costs so instead of the normal privately-chartered jet, the Premiership stars will be taking a scheduled flight from Southampton to Manchester Airport on Friday.

Sources at Pompey say they will now be looking at other ways of cutting costs as they prepare to enter administration.

While administration will lead to the loss of nine points making relegation from the Premier League almost certain, it may mean the club becomes a more attractive proposition for investors.

Phil Hall, spokesman for current owner Balram Chainrai, said: 'As Chainrai said, one of the problems is the groups we have been talking to, when they looked at buying the club with all the debt, it becomes a difficult proposition for any investor as a starting point.

'Any businessman coming in has a very difficult decision to make.

'They may well be more interested in the club if the debt is reduced.

'It becomes more viable. It will help re-build the club.'

Mr Hall said Mr Chainrai has no choice but to put Pompey into administration to avoid the club being wound up at the High Court.

'If you can't find a new buyer, there's no other choice,' he said.

'He has got to try and protect his own investment. He came in and offered this short term loan to Al-Faraj and finds himself with a football club with lots of debt.

'We think it's the right decision long term but it's also got to be the right decision for him.

'It's not just about the supporters and the club but it's also what's best for him as well. He's going to have to put several million pounds in to keep the club running. 'He knows he can't just walk away. He's going to have to put more in to keep the club going to get through it.

'Hopefully it will provide the opportunity to bring in a new owner in the summer.'
