Calls for public to ‘Love Your Police’ in city campaign
POLICE will host a day of action to strengthen community links as front desks at two Portsmouth stations prepare to shut.
Officers are urging residents to ‘Love Your Police’ by handing out flyers on ways people can contact the force.
It comes as Hampshire Constabulary prepares to shut front desks at Cosham and Fratton stations to save cash.
The front desk at Portsmouth Central station in Winston Churchill Avenue will stay open, but instead of being manned round-the-clock it will open from 8am to 10pm daily.
Southsea station is to shut completely as the force battles to save up to £53m by 2015.
But as the closures loom, officers from Portsmouth City Centre Unit have come up with the day of action to talk to residents about other ways they can contact police and report crime.
Safer Neighbourhoods Teams across the city will hand out flyers with contact details on and talk to the public about the changes on Monday.
Superintendent Norman Mellors said: ‘An in depth review of how our communities use our station enquiry offices included analysis of visitors to our enquiry offices and demand for services at different times of day. The review concluded that the majority of residents prefer self-service options such as email and telephone as well as interacting with officers in the community.
‘We are not a ‘faceless’ organisation, we will conduct regular beat surgeries within the community and an enquiry office does remain open seven days a week with an option to contact us 24/7 by dialling 101. You can also keep updated with our work through Facebook and Twitter.’
Front desks at Cosham and Fratton will shut on February 19 and March 16 respectively. The public will still be able to get help via intercoms at the stations.

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 03:46 PMGcpfc - so you get a bobby strolling along the Drayton Road, deterring only those who can be bothered to wait until they have turned a corner, and a little old lady gets mugged at Hilsea. How long do you think it will take the police to get to her? The idea of Dixon of Dock Green policing was only ever effective on the TV! The modern day demands of the police are extremely complex and demanding. As well as responding to calls which require the immediate attendance of a warranted police officer, officers have to make crime enquiries, take statements, liase with specialist departments, prepare prosecution files for court and a dozen other tasks. If you think the police sit around in a cosy car or office drinking tea then I suggest you apply to spend a shift with your local police. You will then be in a position to fully understand how the system functions. What you have to be aware of is that warranted police officers are highly qualified and prepared to undertake a very difficult and stressful job, which only a very small percentage of the public are capable of doing!

Monday, February 13, 2012 at 02:22 PMI'd love the police.........to do their job. We need to get the police back on the beat. Maybe it's not as cosy as the squad car or the office but it will present a visible presence and perhaps catch more criminals. I think the only answer is zero tolerance and proper policing. If the police want the public to love them then do a better job, after all you take the lions share of council tax monies and have the best employment conditions in the country.

Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 08:47 AMIsn't the purpose of this to allow people to comment on the story and not comment on other peoples comments? Yes I am well aware of the attestation sworn by Police, whilst some do indeed stand by this oath, the revenue collectors do not.

Friday, February 10, 2012 at 11:25 AMWould "Love the Police" if they actually stood by the oath that they swore, instead of being revenue collectors.
