Campaigners to set up camp outside cathedral for Occupy Portsmouth
ACTIVISTS plan to set up a temporary Occupy Portsmouth camp outside the city’s Anglican cathedral.
Today campaigners taking their inspiration from the global ‘occupy’ protest movement were due to set up tents for two days of events and camping in Old Portsmouth.
The get-together will last from 10am today until around 5pm on Sunday, with some activists braving the icy conditions to sleep outside the cathedral overnight.
Tim Dawes, convenor for the South East Hampshire Green Party, said: ‘The camp will include a tented university called the People’s Youniversity which gives a voice to those outside the main stream of political and economic analysis.
‘The Youniversity is supported by a number of local organisations, including The Green Party, Portsmouth Against the Cuts Together, Positive Money and the Socialist Party, but it’s essentially run by the Occupy Portsmouth Group, whose members camp overnight and hold general assemblies to decide what they are doing.
‘Speakers will include the Green MEP for the South East, Keith Taylor, and the well- known writer and Guardian columnist, Bea Campbell.’
Staff at Portsmouth Cathedral have met with the activists and the dean, the Very Rev David Brindley, will also give a speech at the camp today.

Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 02:33 PM@25 - I have no interest in the Tory party, or any other political party. I am a capitalist though, and proud to be so. I will continue to live the way I chose, which includes driving my 3ltr 4x4!

Monday, February 6, 2012 at 09:15 AMI was there that weekend, and must say, though your obviously entitled to free speech, some of the comments are utterly pathetic. AK47s & flamethrowers? is that your solution being as your possibly too spineless to come up, and question or debate whats going on? I'm not part of Occupy, or any group, but went along to lend support, and the level of positive enthusiasm was amazing. Many residents came out and listened, and supported what was going on, and the speakers included an MEP, and a prominent national journalist and campaigners, musicians, a doctor and poets. And the misconception about all of us being unemployed is yet another rather bizarre and immature image. In fact, the majority of us work full time, or are in study. Maybe, before posting these ridiculous, attention seeking, ill-informed things, you should maybe do a bit of research, or possibly get to know members of the organisation better?

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 11:05 PM@22 - So sorry, please accept my apology for daring to comment on a public forum! I will in future, keep my opinions to myself and not bother you. Please carry on as before because as you will know, you have 99% of the population behind you. Sorry again.

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 09:33 PM@The Watcher, I take issue with a number of points you make, First, tad sarcastic to start but then nevermind. Second, hiring a lecture hall or suchlike costs money, and thirdly the national media are an agenda pushing bunch of politically nepotistic bores who don't want the mainstream agenda rocked by a few people who march on green space, and let's be frank here achieve very little in the grand scheme of things. So whilst I agree on one point (ie the futility, if that's what you're getting at?) it is generally futile, let them have their fun, and stop whingeing.

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 09:14 PMHey 99% - great of you to make an appearance on here. I am somewhat cofused tough, you state that, "...the purpose of which is to exchange views and raise questions about many diverse subjects that affect us all on a day to day basis'. I understand that as we all have issues that are dear to our hearts, which we sometimes feel strongly about, but there are ways and means to airing ones views. You, and your friends, could use a multitude of methods to meet with like minded folk and discuss the flavour of the moment, like hiring a hall, lecture theatre or the internet, which are all perfectly acceptable methods of communication. Why oh why do you feel you have to invade a beautiful area of green space and erect signs to advertise your presence! Everyone is entitled to their views and opinions but one should not expect everybody else to have to take notice of the opinion of others. Unfortunately, as you can see from remarks on here, the public do not want to hear your opinions or what you have to say! Do you not take note of the national media and realise that an vast majority of the country detest the way that socialist left wing politics is forced into the public arena by such actions as those desecrating the area outside St Pauls? If you wish to discuss these topics then do so amongst yourselves in private! Forcing ones views and actions on another is fascism and not generally welcomed in 21c Britain!

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 08:15 PMAs one of the founder members of the 'Occupy Portsmouth' group, i'd like to point out that the great majority of us do work and 'contribute to society'. Both the camps we've set up have been totally alcohol and drug free , weekend only events we've named 'The Peoples Youniversity', the purpose of which is to exchange views and raise questions about many diverse subjects that affect us all on a day to day basis. Please come join us at our next event, where hopefully we may change your opinion of us and what we're about............... please leave the flamethrowers at home though, they may compromise our 'leave no trace' policy ;-) Peace & Love.

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 08:01 PMI don't know what they are on about. Everyone knows that the the country's government and financial institutions are run with the highest standards of honesty and transparency in the best interests of all. With the excellent and low-cost education system combined with a vibrant jobs market, I don't understand what people are complaining about.

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 03:29 PMNot sure at all that this is any kind of genuine campaign - Occupy is backed all over the world by millionaire celebrities who see it as a toy. It's a media hype operation. If I were a capitalist, I'd fund it, to discredit all opposition to my world of endless profit and greed.

Sunday, February 5, 2012 at 11:52 AMGraham Wheatley, I know, I am blessed with the ability to read. Don't you think it's a little biased to target one faith over another? Not only are they a nuisance, but slightly discriminatory too!
