Card skimmer strikes at Gunwharf Quays
A man was arrested after a card skimming device was found at a cash machine at Gunwharf Quays.
Police are praising the vigilance of the member of the public who reported it and are warning others to be on the look out when using ATMs.
The device was found at around 2pm on Friday at the Lloyds TSB cashpoint next to Burger King.
The suspect - a 27-year-old man from London - was arrested by officers later that evening at the same cash point.
Detective Constable Fiona Wright, from Portsmouth CID, said: 'The member of the public who found the device clearly prevented other people from becoming victims of crime.
'We've not yet been able to talk to that person so I would ask them to come forward and make contact with the police.
'The device had been attached to the cash machine and was recovered by security officers at Gunwharf Quays.
'I'd urge anyone who takes out money from a cash point to always be vigilant: look out for anything suspicious or unusual.
'It's always worth covering up your PIN as you enter it into the machine so no-one else can see it.
'If you see anyone acting suspiciously around a cash point, report it to the police immediately.'
Anyone with information is asked to contact DC Wright at Fratton police station on 101 or 0845 045 45 45 from outside Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. You can also call the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
