Cash stolen from city’s armouries museum

A MUSEUM was raided by burglars who made off with a safe.

Burglars took a large grey safe containing more than £1,000 from the Royal Armouries Museum at Fort Nelson, Portsdown Hill Road, Portsmouth.

Cash tins were also taken during the break-in, which happened between 11.00am and 3.45pm on Sunday.

The discarded safe and cash tins were later found at Newlands Farm, Fareham, on Wednesday, but the money inside was gone.

PC Stephen Way said ‘It was a busy Sunday at the monument so there were a lot of visitors and possible witnesses to the theft.

‘The safe was heavy and cumbersome and it would have taken at least two people to carry it. We are appealing for anyone who thinks they might have seen anything suspicious in the area late on Sunday morning or early in the afternoon.’

Anyone with information should contact PC Stephen Way on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
