Cathedral bellringers launch an appeal

Bell ringers at Portsmouth Cathedral have kicked off a campaign to raise £35,000 to install two extra bells in the tower.

The Anglican cathedral in Old Portsmouth only has 10 bells at present – two fewer than other notable cathedrals, such as Winchester and Guildford.

Richard Harrison, tower captain at the cathedral, believes the extra bells would help put the cathedral on the map. He said: 'We know that times are hard but the cathedral has been a part of Portsmouth for centuries, serving the local community.'

The campaign began last month and has already passed the 6,000 mark.

There will be several events held throughout the year to raise money for the bells, including a summer fete, a sponsored walk and a flower festival at the cathedral.

Mr Harrison added: 'There is also an opportunity for individuals to "buy the bells" in memory of a loved one, which is very rare. They can do this and have an inscription on the bell.'
