Celebrity chefs put spice into school's charity cash drive

Top chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson have helped children make a recipe book to raise money for their school and for charity.

Boundary Oak School in Fareham wrote to TV chefs for help but didn't think they would hear back.

But pupils and staff were over the moon when top chefs Gordon Ramsay, Gary Rhodes, Nigella Lawson, Nick Nairn and Phil Vickery sent in their recipes for the book.

Now the book is set to raise around 2,500 for the school and 500 for the Rainbow Centre, Fareham, which helps youngsters with cerebral palsy.

Jo Ekin, registrar at the school, said: 'It's been an incredibly successful project.

'A parent and member of the parent's association, Sarah Ironside, came up with the recipe book idea.

'It was thought a cook book was a nice way of raising some money and something the children could really get involved with.

'It was then decided to contact some celebrity chefs. No one really expected to hear from them, but we were shocked when they started replying and saying yes.

'The children were thrilled to see their recipes alongside chefs they know from the TV.

'If all books sell, we're set to raise a fantastic amount.'

All 135 pupils, school staff and parents were invited to contribute starters, mains and desserts to the recipe book, including dishes such as Smoked Salmon Sushi with Lettuce Boats, and Lemon Paradise dessert.

The 80-page book, which is on sale at the school and Rainbow Centre, is being sold for 6 with 1 from each book going to the Rainbow Centre.

Julie Woodward, in charge of events and community fund-raising at the Rainbow Centre, said: 'This is a very difficult time for charities and over the next few months we will be doing all we can to try and maintain the levels of funds we need to keep the centre running.

'The donations received from the sales of this cook book will help us on our way to reaching our targets.'

To buy a copy of the recipe book, call the school on (01329) 280955.
