Centre for families gains charity status
A group which supports families in Portsmouth is celebrating after becoming an independent charity.
The Roberts Centre is a unique, child-focused family support charity which offers help to families dealing with relationship breakdowns and homelessness.
Over the past two decades the centre has helped thousands of families from the Portsmouth and Havant area through numerous schemes.
Carole Damper, Roberts Centre manager, said: 'People in the Portsmouth area are incredibly caring, and over the past two decades their contributions have enabled us to help thousands of local families.
'We are extremely well supported by churches, schools, local organisations and individuals.
'Every year in October we receive donations from harvest festivals, and at Christmas time we get presents for the children which we distribute. The kindness people show really is overwhelming at times.'
Troy Henshall, director of corporate services at First Wessex, which has helped run the Roberts Centre, based in Crasswell Street, alongside Portsmouth Housing Association, said: 'This really is great news.
'It's fantastic to see the results of the hard work by employees within the group and we are certain that the Roberts Centre is well positioned to maintain its track record of developing innovative services within Hampshire.
'We are delighted to have had the opportunity to support the move to independence and will continue to work with the Roberts Centre in the future.'
