Chunk of man's finger is bitten off in club fight

A man has had a chunk of his finger bitten off in a snooker club brawl.

Police were called to Stubbington Snooker Club after a fight broke out between two men in the bar area.

When they got to the scene officers found a 26-year-old man from Gosport bleeding heavily from his hand.

Police say part of one of his fingers had been bitten off during the punch-up on Sunday afternoon.

Paramedics were called and the victim was treated at the scene before being taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

The severed finger part is believed to have been recovered but it is not known whether it could be reattached.

A 35-year-old man from Portsmouth was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He has been released on bail and has to answer back to Fareham police station on February 24.

Police spokeswoman Katie Wilson said: 'The incident was reported to us at 5.22pm on Sunday.

'We were called to a fight at the snooker club, and on arrival a man was identified as having part of his finger bitten off.'

Police are now examining CCTV at the club and scenes of crime officers scoured the inside of the bar area for evidence for several hours on Sunday evening.

The club, which is on the first floor above several shops at the Green, Stubbington, was open as normal again yesterday.

John Dinnage, 52, who was at the club yesterday with his 10-year-old son Jack, said: 'We have only recently joined here, but we have lived in the area for the past six years and this is the first I've ever heard of any trouble in here.

'I'm very surprised to hear that something like this has happened.

'I've heard of one or two fights in the Green, but never anything like this before – it's shocking.'

Club owner Steve Street was unavailable for comment.

Anyone with any information about the incident should contact Fareham CID on 0845 0454545 or use the anonymous Crimestoppers number on 0800 555111.
