Clean sweep planned on shoreline

VOLUNTEERS are ready to make a clean sweep this weekend in a huge operation to clear up our beaches.

Helpers have come forward to take part in the Beachwatch 2006 survey – an event backed by The News' We Can Do It! campaign.

And you can join in simply by turning up on the day.

Each year the nationwide Beachwatch survey – set up by the Marine Conservation Society – uncovers hundreds of tons of litter along our beautiful coastlines.

This weekend's events will take place on Saturday and Sunday across our communities.

A clean-up at Southsea will take place on Sunday, organised by Triton Scuba and Southsea Town Council. It starts at 2pm and volunteers will meet at that time at South Parade Pier. Just turn up on the day for a full briefing.

Colas, Portsmouth's street-cleaning contractors, will be helping out by being on hand to clear away all the junk once it has been piled up.

Portsmouth City Council is offering free equipment to anyone who wants to take part in the city. Litter pickers, bags and gloves are available by calling Stewart Lennard, of the council's Clean City team, on (023) 9268 8227.

Two groups of offenders who have been ordered to do community service will be out in force when they make a sweep of foreshores at Stamshaw and Farlington foreshore. They will be in Stamshaw at 10am on Saturday and then move on to Farlington from midday.

Members of Portchester Civic Society will be carrying out their own survey around Portchester shoreline on Sunday.

The group is hoping as many people as possible join in, starting at 10am on Sunday at Portchester Sailing Club, at the end of Castle Street.

The Marine Conservation Society is appealing for more volunteers to help carry out surveys in Cobnor, Chichester, this Saturday, from 10am to midday.

If you would like to take part call Chichester Harbour Conservancy on 01243 512301.
