AN INQUEST into the death of a Fareham-based police officer heard how his colleagues battled to save his life.

PC Steve Rawson was riding on Thomas Lewis Way, in Southampton, in April last year when he was thrown from his motorcycle in a crash.

The jury heard how colleagues tried to save him after witnessing the accident in which his motorbike collided with a BMW driven by Michal Pliszczynski.

But when officers reached him, he wasn’t breathing.

During the first day of the inquest held by coroner Grahame Short, Inspector Richard Parsons, head of the road death investigation team, said: ‘Trauma medics battled for 45 minutes to restart his heart after he arrived at hospital.

‘But nothing could be done to save him.’

They court also heard from eye witness Ian Robertson who was driving back to Essex after making a delivery in Southampton.

He said: ‘I saw this motorbike woosh past me and the car in front and I thought “I hope he makes it past that BMW.”

‘Then I heard a crash.’

The inquest will continue tomorrow.
