Communities gather to mark Holocaust Memorial Day

MEMBERS of the Jewish, Christian and gypsy community joined with Freemasons to mark Holocaust Memorial Day in a moving ceremony in Havant.

Mayors from Fareham, Gosport and Eastleigh travelled the Havant cemetery to participate in the ceremony led by Councillor Gerald Shimbart.

It is 69-years since the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp and Councillor Leah Turner, who is herself Jewish, read a stirring piece about the history kinder transport as Children from schools across the area looked on.

Cllr Gerald Shimbart said: ‘We have been holding this service in Havant for about six years now. It’s important that we remember, and keep remembering.

‘People from across the area have joined us today because they realise that we our service is special, other places do not hold a service at all.

‘Lots of children were here today too which is very good.’

The service ended with wreathes being laid on the stunning stone and metal memorial in the Eastern Road cemetery.
