PEOPLE are being urged to be vigilant after a string of burglaries in Gosport.
Thieves smashed their way into two homes taking two wedding rings and a necklace from a home.
A burglar smashed a rear window to get into the home in House Farm Road in Privett, Gosport, between 7am and 4pm on Wednesday, March 6, taking the two wedding rings and necklace.
In a second burglary, a would-be thief took nothing after forcing open a rear window in Jellicoe Avenue in Alverstoke between 6.20am and 8.15pm on last Tuesday.
Police have only now released the details.
The latest raids come after a recent spate of burglaries saw three homes hit in Bevis Road, Gosport, last Monday and Tuesday with thieves taking bank cards and a pizza.
A home in Sedgley Grove was also hit last Monday when a thief stole a money tin containing £300 and a silver Tag watch, a Pandora-style bracelet and green, blue, and silver charms.
On Saturday, March 2 a burglar stole a brown satchel-style handbag, a brown Radley purse and a black Nokia phone while the residents were in between 10pm and 11pm from a home in Sovereign Avenue.
Last month saw eight homes burgled in Elson and Forton.
Chief Inspector Darren O’Callaghan, Hampshire Constabulary’s Gosport and Fareham District Commander, said: ‘Police are taking further action to tackle a small recent increase in burglaries in Gosport. Officers are using a range of tactics to make it harder for offenders to operate, and to bring them to justice.
The overall numbers of house burglaries across the whole Gosport and Fareham district are down by 13 per cent since April 2012, compared to the same 11-month period a year earlier.’
He added anti-social behaviour and crime in Gosport is down to its lowest level in five years.
Councillor Peter Edgar, member for Alverstoke ward at Gosport Borough Council urged residents to look out for each other.
He said: ‘This is a very worrying trend and it’s interesting that Gosport has proved itself to be one of the safest communities in the country.
‘I would just urge the public not only to be vigilant but not to make it easy for them.Ask people to be neighbourly, when they know a neighbour is away on holiday or a house is vacated.’
