A UKIP county councillor is set to run for parliament in Gosport.
Cllr Christopher Wood, member for Fareham Crofton at Hampshire County Council, is to contest sitting Tory MP Caroline Dinenage in 2015.
He said: ‘I recognise what a privilege it is to live in this part of the world but I also understand the many problems which we face here, particularly the appalling transport infrastructure, which I face on my daily commute to and from work in Southampton.
‘I am working hard on Hampshire County Council to alleviate some of our traffic woes, to improve our schools and protect vital bus, library and social services against the very tough economic conditions enforced upon us.
‘I understand the vital role the Royal Navy has to play in our local area.
‘The defence cuts have been hugely damaging to our town and this is something we must fight against with all of our might.’
Cllr Wood started training to be a Warfare Officer in the Submarine Service before deciding to focus on politics.
He was selected by his party to stand.
