CPRE welcomes eco-support in case against house-building

Plans for housing in the south of England have come under intense scrutiny by a House of Commons Select Committee, leading an environmental pressure group to hope they can be altered.

The House of Commons Select Committee on Housing in the South East has released its first report of session 2009-10, in which it spells out support for green belt areas across the region, and asks for caution to be used when implementing plans to build 654,000 new homes in the south of England - 80,000 of which would be in The News' region.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has welcomed the report.

Its south east director Edward Dawson said: 'It's encouraging the MPs on the committee appear to be singing from the same hymn sheet as us.

'Pressure for housing in the south east is more intense than in any other region. This poses difficulties for the pattern of settlements, and the character of its countryside.

'CPRE is pleased to note the desire to produce sustainable communities, but is concerned least the report leads to yet further pressures in our already over-crowded region. Improved design, affordability and sustainability should be the key watch words for the future.'
