Crime commissioner makes picks for Hampshire chief

THE short list for the next chief constable of Hampshire has been chosen by the new Police and Crime Commissioner.

Simon Hayes has selected his four candidates for the county’s top police job and is expected to reveal his choice on Monday. His choice will go before the Police and Crime Panel which will approve or veto Mr Hayes’s decision.

The new chief will receive a salary of £146,521 with no performance-related bonuses.

But they will be entitled to claim expenses, up to £40,000 for an official car for travel on duty, a relocation allowance of up to £35,000 and a housing allowance.

A spokesman for the commissioner’s office said: ‘The salaries are set nationally according to the size of force. The commissioner has made a decision to offer an initial salary of five per cent below the spot rate due to cost savings.

‘We’re expecting the decision of the panel to be known on January 30. If they veto it, we have to go back to the short list to see if they are suitable and meet our criteria.’

Current chief constable Alex Marshall will become the first chief executive of the new National College of Policing in February.
