Crumbling walls are repaired at Buriton church

A HISTORIC church has been given a facelift thanks to a cash injection from the local council.

St Mary’s Church in Buriton, near Petersfield, dates back to the 12th century and is a focal point for the village.

But internal walls in the church were in need of urgent repair.

East Hampshire District Council has now provided a £3,000 grant to go towards the £5,600 project.

Nicholas Tolliday, of the Parochial Church Council, said the new plaster will be in keeping with the traditional style of the old building.

‘The walls were crumbling, looking unsightly and causing a potential health and safety issue,’ he said.

‘We must do the work in a way that is sympathetic to the heritage of the church and that complements some of its older features.’
