Dame Ellen backs Geoff in Atlantic sailing adventure

RECORD-BREAKING Dame Ellen MacArthur has pledged her support for disabled hero Geoff Holt as he prepares to sail across the Atlantic.

Quadriplegic Geoff, pictured, will next month attempt to become the first disabled yachtsman to cross the Atlantic.

Fellow yachtswoman Dame Ellen, who broke the world record for the fastest solo circumnavigation of the globe in 2005, has spoken of her admiration for him.

She said: 'Geoff is one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. Not only has he already achieved the unachievable, but he is humble with it.

'I think few will understand just how important this challenge is to Geoff; perhaps in a way it is unfinished business. This next chapter is as incredible as his life so far.

'I wish Geoff all the best, and I can only think of the pleasure you will feel of once again being at sea under the stars.'

Geoff became the first disabled sailor to circumnavigate Britain in 2007. In his next record-breaking attempt, he will be joined onboard the specially-adapted 60ft catamaran Impossible Dream by his carer Susana Scott and a film-maker.

But all the sailing will be done by Geoff unless there is an emergency.

Geoff flew into Lanzarote on Tuesday to make the final preparations for the trip, before he leaves on December 10. The 43-year-old, from Shedfield, near Fareham, has put his life savings of 35,000 into his dream of crossing the Atlantic.

He said: 'We are getting the boat ready at the moment. It is really good to finally be out here in Lanzarote with Susana getting the boat as we want it.

'We are currently stowing equipment, food - especially chocolate for Susana.

'We are both so excited as it really feels like it is about to happen. From next Friday we will take the boat out for some practice sails and we really hit the countdown to the 10th.'

Geoff Holt has chosen The Ellen MacArthur Trust as the official charity for his Atlantic crossing.
