Daring’s raring to go

EASY PASSAGE HMS Daring making her way through the Suez Canal

HMS Daring has sailed through the Suez Canal as she steams towards the Gulf amid rising tensions with Iran.

It took the Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer 12 hours to pass through the 120-mile canal linking the Mediterranean with the Middle East, where the warship will spend the next six months on patrol.

The narrowness of the canal meant Daring sailed through the passage on high alert with her upper deck guns manned throughout the journey.

Gunnery Officer, Lieutenant Jason Hannigan, said: ‘We have trained repeatedly to prepare for this demanding passage. The team performed well and the ship made the transit through the Suez exactly as planned.

‘It was a particularly proud day for me in my career in the Royal Navy.’

The new £1bn warship is on her first operational deployment and heads east at a tense time after Iran threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz in retaliation to EU trade sanctions over the country’s nuclear weapon ambitions.

Daring is set to join up with the multinational battle group led by the American carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln, which recently sailed through the Strait of Hormuz with the frigate HMS Argyll in a strong show of strength to Iran.
