Despicable: Tin full of poppy cash is stolen
A Poppy Appeal charity collection tin has been stolen from a chip shop.
Pat Scott, owner of May's chip shop in High Street, Cosham, was devastated at the news that the collection tin had been stolen.
The tin had been on the shop counter for two weeks – but was stolen without anyone noticing on Saturday morning.
Mrs Scott, 57, said: 'I am devastated. Someone has just taken that money. It is not my money, it is other people's.
'If they had broken in and stolen anything I wouldn't care half as much.'
The tin had a chain around it, as had another charity tin for multiple sclerosis, but the thieves left that one alone.
She added: 'I really don't know why they took one and not the other.
'It must be a customer and I might have to serve that customer again – they are laughing at us.
'I am making a donation to the Poppy Appeal but it's not the same thing, is it?'
Mrs Scott visited Cosham police station to report the theft and police quickly deployed two officers to warn other shops in Cosham High Street to keep alert.
Hampshire police spokeswoman Liz Harding said: 'This was a despicable and very shocking crime, stealing money donated for a charity appeal.
'The officers who attended spoke to other local businesses, and we would warn people in the area to be aware of this type of crime.'
