Distraction burglar calls on 90-year-old woman

POLICE are hunting a suspected distraction burglar after a 90-year-old woman was almost conned.

A woman called at the pensioner’s home in Tottenham Road, Landport, claiming she had been locked out and needed money for a taxi.

It is a tactic Portsmouth police have been told about several times in recent months – with some elderly victims reporting purses stolen after letting a woman in.

In this case it was unsuccessful, as the homeowner refused to let the fraudster in, and told her to leave.

The incident took place at some time between 11am and 11.30am, on Thursday, April 7.

The female suspect is white, around 30 years old, of average build, taller than 5ft 3ins, with dark hair. She wore a black or brown coloured anorak, white top and was carrying a black handbag.

Det Con Jim Garrett, from Portsmouth CID, said: ‘If someone calls at your door like this and you’re not expecting them, don’t let them in.’

Anyone with information can contact Fratton police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
