Divers dig deep to raise money for our heroes

NAVY divers stripped down and got their sponges out for charity.

The Bridge Troop, which consists of potential navy divers and Phase Two students, washed cars all morning to raise cash for Help for Heroes.

A steady flow of cars, vans and caravanettes took full advantage of a thorough wash and wax polish at the diving school in Horsea Island, Portsmouth.

And the energetic lads were over the moon to have raised 70 for their chosen cause.

The 10-strong team took on the task with enthusiasm and quickly organised themselves into an effective washing squad – adapting their motto 'physically ready, mentally prepared' to the job in hand.

Leading physical trainer Jack Daniels, who overlooks the team, said: 'The lads work extremely hard throughout the day and it says a lot for them that they are willing to take this on as an extra activity.

'They were extremely keen to ensure that this happens and give something back to those who deserve it.'

Stephen Legg, from diving training support at VT Flagship, said: 'They've got the car- washing facilities at the motor garage there, so it was advertised around the area and they had a good queue of cars there all through the morning.

'We had the civilian staff, Flagship staff and a few senior officers bringing their vehicles down for a wash. They did a great job washing them down, scrubbing them and polishing them up very nicely.

'It was Jack and some of the others who came up with the idea – they thought it would be a good idea to do something for Help for Heroes, and we've got the facilities here for the car wash, so that's why they went for that.'

The event proved such a success that the Bridge Troop are planning to make it a monthly event.

Each washday will be in aid of the charity, which helps those who have been wounded in current conflicts.
