Double bonus on cards
Green-thinking staff at an IT firm gave a different kind of Christmas present to children when they donated hundreds of pounds to the Rainbow Centre.
Cobweb Solutions, a provider of IT services with a data centre in Fareham, donated 750 to the Fareham charity after ditching paper-based Christmas cards and replacing them with eCards to help the environment.
The Rainbow Centre, which supports children and families affected by cerebral palsy, will use the money to continue its work across the south of England.
Julie Woodward, community and events fund-raiser at the Rainbow Centre, said: 'The centre is very aware of the importance of being green. We are extremely grateful to Cobweb for its donation as fund-raising is especially difficult at present.
'We accept paper, toners and mobile phones and have recently set up a complete waste management scheme with a local not-for-profit company to encourage companies like Cobweb to recycle more.'
The initiative is the latest in a number of environmentally-focused projects that Cobweb has undertaken. Last summer, it helped its customers produce a total energy saving amounting to a tonne-and-a-half of carbon in just one night, by persuading 58 customers to turn off approximately 700 PCs as part of their PC switch-off evening.
Mark Adams, managing director of Cobweb, said: 'The environment really is one of the most fundamental issues affecting our society.
'We are totally committed to green causes and being able to help a local charity as well just makes the effort all the more worthwhile.
'We would encourage other local businesses to think about what steps, however small, they can take to do their bit for the environment.'
This latest green venture helps Cobweb maintain its international environmental management certification which was awarded in August 2008.
