Duchess gives cancer charity her support

A charity set up by a sick girl's parents has received aristocratic backing.

The Duchess of Devonshire has become patron of Fanconi Hope, set up by Bob and Jeannie Dalgleish after their daughter Louise was diagnosed with Fanconi Anaemia.

The rare genetic disorder can develop into a serious form of anaemia, in which the bone marrow fails to produce blood cells normally.

Bob Hope, 55, of Andover Road, Southsea, said: 'We have established a serious and very credible charity. The duchess' patronage will help us significantly in our efforts to raise funds to support those affected by Fanconi Anaemia.'

The couple have already raised over 10,000 and, in recognition of their efforts, were best volunteer runners-up at the News' We Can Do It Awards in December.

The duchess said: 'I believe that this small charity can have a big impact on many lives. I have been impressed with the passion and drive of the trustees and I, too, share this passion.

She added: 'I would encourage all who want to change the lives of those affected by Fanconi Anaemia to unite together behind this charitable cause.'
