Eager Chernobyl children slot into local pastime
Children from Chernobyl got a taste of slot car racing as part of their annual visit to the area.
The children visit the Methodist Church in Stoke Road, Gosport, every Thursday throughout July to use the Solent Slot Car Club's track there.
The weekly visits are part of their annual trip, run by charity Friends of Chernobyl's Children, and something which all of the children enjoy.
Ian Linford, chairman of the slot car club, said: 'They love it, they really get into it – especially the girls who get very competitive.
'At the end of the championship we give the winners T-Shirts donated by ASDA and I print off 1st, 2nd and 3rd for the winners of the slot car racing, but all of the children get one.'
'Every year they come over and they have a wonderful time. I hope it is one of the highlights of their trip.'
The children, aged between seven and 12, stay with host families around Portsmouth and Gosport and are able to visit every year until they are 12.
