Cash being counted as Blue Day money rolls in

It's been a week since thousands of school children, office staff, and residents went all-out for Blue Day.

And the cash is still rolling in, as our picture here shows.

Clinton and Adele Prince, from the Tom Prince Cancer Trust, are busy trying to see how much they've raised.

Last Friday's Blue Day was the fourth of its kind organised by The News on behalf of the trust.

And what a day it was, with the city already getting into the match-day spirit for Pompey's FA Cup Final the following day.

Tom's sister Emma said: 'It's been incredible.

'And no matter how much money we raise we're still spreading the word about the Tom Prince Cancer Trust.

'Just driving back from collecting and seeing all the kids coming out of school wearing blue and their Pompey tops was fantastic.'

The trust was established in 2004 and was set up in the memory of Tom Prince.

He died the evening before his 16th birthday 18 months after being diagnosed with the teenage bone cancer osteosarcoma.

Shortly after his death his dad Clinton, mum Adele and Emma decided to set up the Tom Prince Cancer Trust to fund research into the disease.

They aim to raise around 1million, and are around 5,000 short of reaching the half-way point.

Emma added: 'I know Blue Day will help us smash that, which is a huge milestone for us.'

The Princes have had more than 2,500 already paid into their Lloyds account, with donations still coming in thick and fast.

But it could be some weeks before the true figure is known.

Around 114 businesses, schools and individuals contributed to Blue Day.

Some raised thousands for the charity, while many counted their offerings in the hundreds or tens of pounds.

Buckets were shaken around Portsmouth, and even at Fratton Park as Pompey players made their way onto the team bus to head to Wembley.

Hair was shaved off, faces painted blue, while houses and shop fronts were dressed in Pompey's colours.

Blue Day was started in 2008 in celebration of Pompey reaching the semi-final of the FA Cup.

A second was then held the day before they reached the Cup Final.

And a third Blue Day was held last year on the eve of Pompey's last home game.

All three events have raised a staggering 100,000 so far.

Emma said she'll be happy with any amount of money raised, because it's all going to a good cause.

She added: 'Even if the 114 people who have registered with the Tom Prince Cancer Trust each raise 100, that would be a nice tidy sum.

'And not everyone will have registered on the Tom Prince Cancer Trust website, so we will just have to wait and see how much money we get.

'A big thank you to everyone who took the time to take part in this year's Blue Day.'
