City recycling centre to close for a month

Portsmouth's major recycling centre will close for a month from next Monday.

The Port Solent waste and recycling centre is set for a 900,000 redevelopment, to improve safety and traffic capacity.

It will be closed completely until October 4, from when it will operate at reduced capacity until March 2011.

Residents are advised to use alternative sites until then.

Cllr Eleanor Scott, Portsmouth City Council's cabinet member for environment, said: 'The improvements to the centre make way for a modern site, with more opportunities to recycle rubbish, and it's also been designed to reduce traffic congestion for local residents, and visitors.

'But a large portion of the money is being spent on urgent repairs to improve safety, after it was discovered the foundations could not continue to support lorries with heavy loads.'

There are 50 recycling points across the city, but the closest large recycling and waste sites to the Port Solent centre are:

Segensworth - Barnes Wallis Way, 01489 589396

Havant - Harts Farm Way, 023 9247 2683

Waterlooville - Hambledon Road, 023 9226 1455

Or for asbestos waste, contact Netley, 023 8040 6182
