Expectant mums' home help

A free workshop for people who are interested in giving birth at home took place at the weekend.

Ten pairs of prospective parents went to the event put on by Chichester Home Birth at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

It was organised in conjunction with Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust to try to inform people about giving birth at home.

Jane Patten, a community midwife for the trust and member of the volunteer-run Chichester Home Birth, had a child at home herself.

She said: 'I chose to have a child at home because I thought if you are not ill, then you don't need to go to hospital. You can stay at home, all your family can be there you are in control, and it is very relaxing. I think it's a very positive experience, for those who want a home birth.'

At the workshop on Saturday morning there was a short presentation, then a range of discussions about home birth.
