YOUNG masterminds showed they were as bright as buttons when they triumphed in our ninth annual We Can Do It Schools' Quiz.
Brainy youngsters from four primary schools and four secondary schools had their knowledge and nerves tested as those with the right answers and fastest fingers on the buzzers came out on top.
The final was held at the Royal Marines Museum in Eastney.
Teams earned their places by being the top teams in an online quiz in which a record 300 teams took part.
In the primary school quiz the teams from St James' CofE Primary School in Emsworth, Crofton Hammond Junior School in Stubbington, St Swithun's Catholic Primary School in Southsea and Castle Primary School, Portchester, competed against each other.
It was St James' – made up of 10 year olds Emily Hawkins and Sam Tweedle, and nine year olds Oliver Beken and Xavier Harris – who won with 26 points
Sam said: 'The last questions were quite stressful but we managed to keep going and get the right answers. The only other time I've done a quiz was on the internet, this was much better.'
Emily added: 'I think our strongest point was on the picture rounds, we did well with them. I enjoyed the quiz, it was good to win.'
The secondary school contest saw a great battle between teams from St Edmund's Catholic School in Landport, City of Portsmouth Boys' School in Hilsea and two teams from Crookhorn Technology College.
In the end the team from City Boys pulled away to win with 30 points, with St Edmund's second on 25, followed by Crookhorn team one on 23 and Crookhorn team two on 17.
The City Boys team of Ben Freir, 11, Harvey Young, 13, Kieran Magee, 15, and Ryan Lee, 15, were delighted.
Kieran said: 'We don't know how we managed to pull it off.' Ryan added: 'We are on top of the world.'
The quiz was organised by Jeff Legg and Heather White from The News' Education Centre, which every year teaches 2,000 children from 40 different schools what it's like to write for a newspaper.
