Jobs boost in £6m deal with raft of companies

Almost £6m has been awarded to create hundreds of government-paid jobs across Hampshire.

The ambitious bid to conjure up 900 minimum-wage posts was submitted by Hampshire County Council earlier in July, and has today been given the thumbs-up by the government.

The 5.85m bid was made up of a raft of groups including the VT Group, Portsmouth City Council, and a number of charities, which have all pledged to place young people in paid work aimed at benefiting the community.

The jobs will all be for unemployed 18 and 24-year-olds who have been out of work for the last six months, and will range from social work roles to cleaning up council estates.

The 'New Jobs, New Futures' scheme is to be funded by the Department for Work and Pensions to the tune of 6,500 per employee.

Recruits will be selected by Jobcentre Plus and then placed with training agency Enham.

Pensions minister Angela Eagle was expected to declare the bid a success on a visit to Portsmouth's Jobcentre Plus today.

Cllr Mike Hancock, Portsmouth City Council cabinet member for planning, regeneration and economic development, said: 'As one of the areas in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight region with the highest concentration of unemployment the New Jobs, New Futures project will make a difference to the lives of many young people.'
