Road delay warning as link work continues

TRAFFIC delays are expected in Portsmouth tomorrow, when a lane of Mile End Road is closed.

One of the major trunk route's three northbound lanes closes at 6am tomorrow, and will re-open at 3pm on Friday.

The closure is to allow delivery of 1,500 tonnes of material to lay the new Trafalgar Gate link road carriageway, which will be a direct route for naval base traffic using the M275 motorway to enter or leave the city.

It is hoped the new link road will reduce the amount of traffic in the city centre, as well as boosting business at the dockyard by providing a more direct route to the base.

Barry Rawlings, Portsmouth City Council's senior traffic systems engineer, said: "We're at an important stage in the Trafalgar Gate project, but appreciate that the work could cause delays for drivers.

'We've displayed warning signs making drivers aware of the lane closure, but our advice is to consider making journeys earlier or later than usual, or use Eastern Road as an alternative route.

'Drivers might also want to use other forms of transport to avoid delays.'
