East Hampshire council is tops for tax

A council is one of the best in the country when it comes to collecting council tax.

East Hampshire District Council collected 99.1 per cent of council tax payments in 2008/9.

The figure is the highest of any council in Hampshire and among the best in the country.

Councillor Ken Moon, portfolio holder for finance and asset management, said: 'The more people that fail to pay council tax the heavier the burden that falls on honest residents.

'The collected revenue is put towards important local services that we all use and because virtually everyone in East Hampshire pays their council tax we all end up paying less.'

Bill Price, Business Director, added: 'The high collection rates mean we spend less time and money chasing bad debts and that leads to a much more efficient and financially steady council.'
