Eco-award for Havant Borough Council

An actress has presented a council with a prestigious environmental award.

Alexandra Bastedo, who starred in Casino Royale in 1967 and more recently played Cynthia in EastEnders, presented a trophy to Havant Borough Council at the House of Commons in London.

The council beat off hundreds of nominations to win a 'Green Apple Award' for its work in creating a natural burial area at Warblington cemetery.

It was praised for its work in creating a summer wildflower meadow that attracts wildlife, as well as for planting native trees.

Bastedo presented the trophy on behalf of the The Green Organisation, a non-profit environment group which rewards environmental best practice around the world.

Councillor David Collins, in charge of environment at the council, said: 'To be awarded Regional Silver winners for Environmental Best Practice after such a short time in which the natural burial area has been available is outstanding.'
