Elephant helps to make bride's big day

COUPLE Lucy and Olly West will never forget their wedding day – after a huge elephant got in on the act.

The decorated mammal stood behind the pair as part of their Buddhist ceremony in the tropical climes of Sri Lanka.

Mrs West, a 33-year-old teacher from Manor Infant School in Portsmouth, said: 'The elephant was very well behaved and is part of Sri Lankan weddings. Normally the bride and groom leave the wedding on the backs of elephants but I thought that, with my dress, I didn't want to fall off on my wedding day.'

There was a civil, UK-recognised part to the ceremony which included traditional vows in English at the 50-minute ceremony at the beachside city of Bentota.

Mrs West and her husband Olly, 29, who works as a fishmonger, were joined by 18 guests from Portsmouth.
