Energetic dancers think outside the box at show

It was a dance display fit for the television.

But the television, or more specifically the 'curse' of it, was the subject of an adrenaline-pumping performance that brought audiences to their feet at Rock Challenge.

The thought-provoking dance from teenagers at Portsmouth College was one of the highlights of the fifth night of the school performing arts competition at the Guildhall.

Portsmouth College came second for their rendition, which was based on the theme of the television being the 'curse of the nation' and killing the art of conversation of today's generation.

First place went to Yateley School, near Farnborough. But Portsmouth College will also be joining them in the finals after being named as one of the highest scoring runners-up in the entire competition.

On Friday night the college, in Tangier Road, picked up five awards, including praise for their soundtrack, hair and make-up design.

Stuart McGregor, development manager at the Be Your Best Foundation, which organises the nationwide events, said: 'It was fantastic.

'It was our fifth night in a row and the standard stayed as high as it has been.

'Yateley won but we were very lucky to have an absolutely incredible performance from Portsmouth College.

'Portsmouth College were here from 8am until 11.30pm and worked so hard. They just made the atmosphere.

'They were fantastic representatives of Portsmouth and did the city proud.'

Portsmouth College are the fifth local winners and will join Mayville High School, King Richard School, Park Community School, and Mayfield High School in the regional final, held on June 10. The grand final takes place on June 12 at the Guildhall.

South Downs College, Waterlooville, automatically gain a place in the grand final as they are one of the country's top 11 schools due to their previous success in the competition.

Rock Challenge began in Portsmouth in 1996.

It is held in various locations around the UK, with winning schools heading to a place in either the northern or southern final.

But organisers say Portsmouth is the event's spiritual home, with many of the organisers performing in the first Rock Challenge and hailing from the Paulsgrove area.

'This is our home,' added Mr McGregor.

'These shows are close to our hearts.'
