Ex-shipbuilders could go back to school as IT experts

Former Portsmouth shipbuilders VT could help transform the city's secondary schools by building their computer systems.

Ten companies have been whittled down to five for the next stage of the selection process to find two companies to rebuild and refurbish all 12 secondary schools in the city in a 200m project.

One of the final two companies will construct and maintain the schools while the other will provide them with ICT

VT is one of three companies shortlisted for the ICT contract. The company had been shipbuilding in Portsmouth since 1871 until earier this year, and now concentrates on training supplies, waste management and ICT services.

RM Education plc and Redstone Converged Solutions Limited are the other ICT companies shortliste.

Shape and Bouygues Partnership are the shortlisted companies for the building contract.

Councillor John Ireland, Cabinet Member for Education, Children and Young People at the city council said: "BSF is an opportunity to improve the life chances for every child and young person in Portsmouth. The companies shortlisted have demonstrated they have a very good track record.'
