Fact and fiction come together in CSI Portsmouth

How much fact is behind the fiction of your favourite crime novel?

Crime and the City, a unique new event lined up for this month's Portsmouth BookFest, will give fiction fans the chance to find out.

Forensic and crime scene experts from Hampshire Constabulary and the University of Portsmouth will team up with top crime writers for a group discussion that has been dubbed CSI Portsmouth.

The brainchild of Hayling Island-based author Pauline Rowson, the talk will also feature local crime writers including Peter Lovesey, Graham Hurley, Simon Brett and June Hampson.

Pauline said: 'One of the questions I'm often asked when I give talks or speak to fans is "how much of what you write is real, and how do you do your research?".

'So I thought instead of just me getting up and talking about how I do it, we could have a group of writers and the experts themselves to really bring it all together.

'We are going to have a discussion and then invite questions from the audience.

'I'm really looking forward to it, I think it will offer people something different that they've not seen before.

'Hopefully it will appeal to people who might not be that interested in books, but watch television programmes like CSI and find the work the police do fascinating.'

On hand to explain how the professionals do things will be Detective Sergeant Martin Chudley, from Hampshire Constabulary's crime scene investigation team, and Jane Aston and the team from the fingerprinting bureau.

With them will be experts in forensic psychology and crime scenes from the university and panel moderator Cheryl Buggy, station director at Express FM.

The whole week of events is backed by The News and organised by Portsmouth Library Service and the Hayling Island Bookshop, and will see some of Britain's biggest-selling writers arriving in the city.

Among them will be award-winning children's writer Dame Jacqueline Wilson, and former member of the SAS and best-selling author Chris Ryan.

The event will take place on November 6 at Portsmouth's John Pounds Centre. Tickets are on sale from the box office on (023) 9268 8037, at city libraries, the Tourist Information Centre and The Hayling Island Bookshop.
