Fashion designers get to work for big show
Budding fashion designers are preparing to take a winter-themed bow at the theatre by making costumes for a seasonal show.
Eight second-year fashion and textile design with enterprise students from the University of Portsmouth are making 14 bee costumes for Chichester Festival Theatre's production of The Snow Queen.
The show, an adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson's tale of transformation, friendship and fantastical creatures in icy lands, featuring storytelling, dance music and movement performed by 10-19 year-olds will be on from December 16-31, and the students have already started pattern-cutting for the costumes.
Elaine Igoe, Senior Lecturer in the University's school of art, design and media, said: 'This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to obtain first-hand experience of working with experts in costume design and production.
'The students get to practise their skills and the theatre gets to tap into their talent – it's a win-win situation.
'There's a big difference between fashion design and costume design so it's good for the students to see whether this is a career they'd like to pursue.'
Amy Jackson, costume designer for The Snow Queen, said: 'I'm so pleased we're linking with the university and really impressed with the number of students who've volunteered. If any of them really stand out they could easily get a job out of this.
'They'll first see their costumes come to life when worn by the characters during "Tech week" when the lighting, set and costumes come together all at once. Seeing the costumes on stage will make all their hard work worthwhile.'
