A MAN was killed after falling in front of a train at Hilsea station.

Emergency services were called just before 8pm last night to reports of a body on the tracks.

A fire crew from Cosham station attended the incident.

Commuters were delayed for more than an hour as replacement bus services ran between Havant and Portsmouth.

The line reopened at about 10.30pm.

Steve Kingett, of Newcombe Road, Portsmouth, was waiting for the 8.33pm train.

He said: ‘I was on the platform and saw a guy in the corner of my eye.’

Rianna Dwyer, of Fratton, was waiting for the 8.01pm service from Hilsea.

She said: ‘I didn’t see it happen but the emergency services were on the scene very quickly.

‘I feel sorry for the family.

‘Just to realise what happened must be awful.’

Sgt Derek Bish, from British Transport Police, said at the scene: ‘We had a call that a train had struck a male person at Hilsea.

‘The male was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

‘The British Transport Police are treating the incident as non-suspicious.

‘Obviously there were several witnesses at the station but any other witnesses should contact us on 0800 40 50 40.’
