Father and son keep politics in the family
A father and son are standing against each other for different parties in this week's local elections.
Paul and Chris Pritchard are going head-to-head in the hope of becoming Hampshire county councillor for Hayling Island this Thursday.
Dad Paul, 61, is standing for the Lib Dems after around 20 years in the party. But his 29-year-old son Chris is standing for the English Democrats.
Paul, who runs a training business, said: 'When Chris told me he was getting involved in local politics I was pleased. It's important that young people get involved.
'If I lose, I would rather lose to my son than lose to some other party – at least I know he has a keen interest in making a difference.'
It is the first time either man has stood for election in Hayling Island, although Paul used to be a Lib Dem councillor in West Berkshire before moving to the area.
Despite differences between the parties, both men say on a local level they want to clean up Hayling Island and improve parking near the shops in Mengham.
Chris, a security guard at Cascades in Portsmouth, said: 'At a local level we agree more, although on a party political level we do have some debates and they can get quite heated when it comes to things like our position on Europe. But it always stays friendly.'
Despite his dad's long involvement in politics, Chris said: 'It's something I would have done anyway.
'When I saw the manifesto for the English Democrats I believed in it.'
Elections take place this Thursday for Hampshire County Council, West Sussex County Council and the European parliament.
There are 78 seats up for grabs across Hampshire, including seats in Fareham, Gosport, Havant, East Hants and Winchester, which covers parts of Wickham, Whiteley and Denmead.
