Firefighters rescue boy stuck on bed base in subway flood

A YOUNG boy was rescued by firefighters after becoming trapped on a part-submerged divan bed base in a subway.

The eight-year-old had waded through flood waters in the subway, near the Painters Arms in Lake Road, Portsmouth, when he panicked and called the emergency services. A crew from Red Watch at Southsea fire station went out to help him at 5.15pm on Saturday.

Crew manager Danny Manns said it was a quick job for his firefighters.

‘There was a divan bed base in the subway and he was stuck on top of that,’ he said.

‘The water was about knee-deep. We didn’t have to do much apart from carry him to dry ground.

‘We found out afterwards that he walked through it.

‘Where he was tiny he made it to the subway, panicked a little bit and decided he couldn’t get back out.’

It took the single crew around 10 minutes to help him. The boy was with a group of friends.
