Firework safety tips issued by fire service this Halloween

FIREFIGHTERS are urging the public to take precautions to ensure they enjoy fireworks displays safely this Halloween.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is highlighting steps to reduce the risk of harm.

Carlton Kerr, from the service’s community safety team, said: ‘Fireworks can be fun, but can also be dangerous, even lethal.

‘The utmost care is necessary in their storage, handling and use, whether you are organising a display for the family, friends or the general public. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service wants you to have a safe event – by following these simple tips the risks can be greatly reduced.’

People are urged only to buy fireworks marked BS 7114 or with a CE mark – this shows that the firework meets British or European safety standards, read instructions and make suitable supports and launchers if setting off Catherine wheels or rockets. Keep a closed metal box to store them in.
