MORE than £90m worth of homes and commercial buildings are at risk of flooding – and that will increase to £592m over the next century.

The scale of the problem along Gosport and Fareham’s shoreline was revealed as a flooding plan was put out to consultation yesterday.

The Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership hopes to tackle flooding with its new coastal management strategy.

Councillor Ingeborg Forder is the coastal representative at Gosport Borough Council.

She said: ‘The strategy has identified several priority flood defence schemes for the Gosport area where communities are at risk of serious flooding both now and in the future.

‘With this evidence we can now make the case for central government funding to help build the defences and reduce these risks.’

The report recommends work worth £32m should be carried out over 100 years.

It has calculated that the work with avoid around £115m of flood damage.

Works include maintenance, capital works, at Upper Quay to Hoeford Lake in Fareham.

In Gosport it said the Ministry of Defence should carry out capital work and maintain defences in areas.

In many places it recommends property-level work should start next year.

The report adds: ‘There are significant areas of lower lying land across Gosport and Fareham that are at risk of flooding from large storm events.

‘Parts of the open coast are potentially at threat from coastal erosion.’

The flood strategy covers the shoreline from Portchester Castle to Burridge.

People are being invited to comment on the document while it is out for consultation from now until December 1.

Cllr Keith Evans, is the executive member for strategic planning and development at Fareham Borough Council.

He said: ‘The consultation provides a real opportunity for residents to provide comment on the different defense options/

‘We hope to see as many people as possible at the public exhibitions.’

A series of exhibitions are being held this month, each from 12pm to 7pm:

- Ferneham Hall, Fareham: September 9

- Gosport Discovery Centre: September 10

- Hill Head Sailing Club: September 11

- Warsash Sailing Club: September 18
