Fort Nelson revamp gets underway

The £3.5million revamp of an historic museum has begun with a bang on Portsdown Hill this afternoon.

A 1930s bungalow at the front of the Royal Armouries Museum at Fort Nelson was spectacularly blown up after being shot at by a Second World War tank.

The explosion marked the official start of a massive project to revamp the musuem's facilities.

The demolition is the first stage of the revamp which will see enhanced visitor areas, galleries and a state-of-the-art education zone.

Last month 2million of Lottery grant money was confirmed by the museum, and a further 1million has already been raised in matched-funding, enabling the work to get underway.

The museum, which is free to enter, will remain open while the project is carried out.
