Four weeks early, and little Lexi-Lou makes history!

MEET Lexi-Lou Cobb – the first baby to be born at Portsmouth's new £256m Queen Alexandra Hospital.

The tot entered the world four weeks early after mum Louise was admitted to the new Mary Rose Maternity Unit.

The 23-year-old was suffering from potentially deadly condition pre-eclampsia and had to undergo an emergency Caesarean section.

But thankfully everything was fine and little Lexi-Lou was born weighing just 4lb 10oz at 7.04pm on Monday – the day that maternity services transferred from St Mary's Hospital, in Milton, to QA.

Mum Louise said: 'I can't believe it. It was just such a shock.

'She's had such a good welcome. I just want her to have a good life and do well in whatever she does.

'It was amazing how quickly it all happened. My mum couldn't believe it happened on the day the unit was moving, but there weren't any problems.

'Everyone has been brilliant.'

Louise was admitted to St Mary's Hospital on Monday morning with pains in her stomach, chest and side.

Tests revealed the pre-eclampsia she was diagnosed with two weeks previously – high blood pressure, leaked protein from her kidneys and fluid retention – had spread to her liver.

Louise, from Stockheath Way, Leigh Park, Havant, was taken to QA by ambulance where surgeons decided to operate.

Chief midwife Donna Ockenden said: 'We are delighted to have helped in the safe arrival of Portsmouth's first baby in our new maternity unit.

'Staff are thrilled to finally be here in their new unit. Portsmouth Hospitals Maternity and neonatal services are already acknowledged as one of the safest services in the UK for both mothers and babies.'

Midwife Debbie Davis, who worked at St Mary's for eight years before maternity services moved to QA, said she was amazed at how quickly the maternity services were transferred.

'It's all gone really well. It's really clean and bright and modern,' she said.

'We're really pleased.'
