Friends hand over thousands as doors close at hospital

Haslar volunteers handed over thousands of pounds to five charities as the Gosport hospital prepares to close its doors.

For a quarter of a century the Royal Hospital Haslar League of Friends has been busy raising money for medical supplies.

But as Haslar is set to shut the group is also folding.

It has now split the 60,000 which it has raised between five charities, all of which have a strong local and medical link.

The charities, which have received 12,000 each, are: The British Limbless Ex-Service Men's Association, Help for Heroes, the Hampshire Air Ambulance, BASICS Hampshire, and Community Responders of Gosport, Lee-on-the-Solent and Fareham.

Peggy Radford, Haslar League of Friends chairwoman, said: 'Over the 25 years the League of Friends has bought equipment for the hospital amounting to about 200,000 and this was due to the hard work and dedication of all our volunteers. July 3 will be a sad day for all our members and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated money.

'We would also like to say a heartfelt thank-you to those members of the public who donated various items for sale over the years. Without you all we would not have been so successful.'

From today, no more major operations will take place at Haslar with all inpatient clinics transferring to the new Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.

But by this Friday any patients remaining at Haslar will either be transferred to the QA to finish their recuperation, or go home if they are well enough.

Frances Allen, the Ministry of Defence's director of Haslar, added: 'The Royal Hospital Haslar League of Friends have raised an enormous amount over the years for many outstanding projects within the hospital and we would like to thank them for all their hard work. It's a testament to their success that the Friends are able to hand over such a large sum.'

QA TRANSFER

Over recent weeks facilities at Haslar have been transferred over to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth.

The orthopaedic wards were set to be moved over yesterday with the surgical ward breast and plastics – the final inpatient clinic – transferred today.

The final outpatient clinic will take place on July 9 for those who have already made appointments. The majority of outpatient facilities are being relocated to the Gosport War Memorial Hospital.
