Fury over animals at circus

Animal rights protesters voiced their anger last night at a circus that uses horses and ponies in its show.

Zippos Circus – one of eight British circuses to still use live animals – started a 13-night run on Southsea Common last night.

Visitors were met by more than a dozen protesters with placards calling on people to boycott the circus.

Sarah Collins, 23, of St Augustine Road in Southsea, said: 'I believe that animals should not be used for entertainment purposes. They don't have a choice and it is exploitation. We don't have the right to use them in this way for human gain.'

But Zippo's creative director, David Hibling, defended his use of animals.

He said: 'We go to great lengths to ensure the uppermost care and provision for our non-human performers.

'If anyone is in any doubt I urge them to come down to Southsea Common during the day and see. We have nothing to hide.'
