Gallery: Easy does it at Goodwood

Hollywood came to Goodwood yesterday when film legend Peter Fonda celebrated the 40th anniversary of iconic road movie Easy Rider.

Accompanied by the sound of Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild, Jane Fonda's brother climbed aboard a 'chopper' motorcycle just like he rode as the laconic, long-haired Captain America back in 1969.

Fonda, visiting the Festival of Speed for the first time, smiled: 'It's a long time since I rode this bike but I'm just so happy to be here. It's a blast.'

While Fonda was entertaining the crowds on two wheels, ex-grand prix star David Coulthard was roaring up the hillclimb course in a 1938 Mercedes W154 and a modern-day Red Bull F1 machine.

The popular Scot said: 'I was here for the very first festival and I've been back many times since. It just gets better and better.'

Early morning rain soon cleared and tens of thousands of fans soaked up the sunshine and action at the world's biggest celebration of motorsport past and present.

By tomorrow around 150,000 petrolheads from around the globe will have descended on Lord March's country estate near Chichester for the annual cross between a race meeting and a garden party.

Formula One world championship leader Jenson Button and reigning F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton will be the biggest draw, flying in tomorrow to meet fans and get behind the wheel. Hamilton will fulfil a lifetime ambition by driving the 1988 McLaren of his boyhood hero, the great Brazilian Ayrton Senna.

Autograph hunters should also look out for fellow F1 drivers Mark Webber and Timo Glock, plus stars from the past ranging from Sir Jackie Stewart and Sir Stirling Moss to Eddie Irvine, John Surtees and Damon Hill.

Away from the famous hillclimb, five-times world rally champion Sebastien Loeb will be spraying gravel on the special forest stage.

Admission is strictly by advance ticket only. Call 01243 755055 or go to goodwood.co.uk/fos
