ABOUT 60 homes have been evacuated due to a gas leak.

Police were called out shortly after 4.20pm today following reports of a leak in Tangier Road, Copnor, Portsmouth.

A cordon stretching about 100m has been put in place in the area as a precaution and police are working with firefighters and Portsmouth City Council to keep people safe.

Residents are being asked to find alternative accommodation where possible.

However the city council has opened an emergency rest centre at Moneyfields Sports and Social Club in Moneyfield Avenue, Copnor for anyone who is unable to make other arrangements.

Tangier Road and part of Copnor Road are closed and motorists are urged to avoid the area and instead use the Eastern Road or M275.

The cordon has also led to the closure of part of the train line in the city and services in and out of Portsmouth are affected.

No such area as "Baffins" until estate agents wanted a term to describe that part of Copnor. No such area as "Moneyfields" either, but then the News has a long tradition of people living in either Southsea, Copnor or Hilsea. I guess it makes it easier than looking to see if it's actually Milton, Fratton, Buckland, North End, Eastney, Stamshaw, Landport, or Tipner....

It's not "sad" to want to know about the history and fabric of your area etc etc...my point was this article is about the gas leak, but it was "sad" how people turned it into I live here, I don't live there, I'm not part if thus area, I am part of that area. Get over it...I guess people that live in "nice" bits put the "nice" bit in their postal address even though it isn't needed....snobby types! End of subject...let's get back to the gas leaks...sure there are forums for history and architecture of areas...this place ain't it!

No Dover Road is in Moneyfields and as the site is shown on Google maps as Dover Road I would say it's Moneyfields ;)

I've always taken a keen interest in the development of Portsmouth and studied it at university as part of my Architecture degree. Why is it 'sad' to want to know about the history and fabric of the built environment you live in? It informs me of the make up of the city and how I can design to fit into the urban grain I'm designing to. For what it's worth I am not the architect for the Copnor bridge site in question! :-) My definition of 'sad' is celebrity culture or the X Factor - but each to their own. As for the OS comment, some OS maps show political ward boundaries, thus Baffins may show up. As I said, some people will call the area Baffins, but historically it's Copnor, it's postal address is Copnor and the site in this story is next to Copnor bridge - in Copnor.

Check your ordnance survey maps. It clearly says Tangier Road is in the district of BAFFINS.

@25 - PCC's Portsmouth Encyclopaedia which references maps of Portsmouth from 1860 to 1890 describes Tangier Lane as Copnor. In fact the only reference to Baffins in the entire document is Baffins Road... in... Copnor: http:www.portsmouth.gov.ukmediaPENC_UPLOAD_2011.pdf When the area of Copnor around Baffins Pond was developed in the early 20th century the area became generally known as Baffins and the naming of the political ward as Baffins has only added to the confusion. However as in this story by The News, the area is correctly named Copnor.

Just to say that when I first lived in BAFFINS in the 70's it was actually part of the official postal address, and not purely the name of the pond. I think once post-codes were created it was dropped, in the same way that Eastney was, for instance, and Eastney still exists, as does Baffins.

That part of Tangier Road is in Copnor. Copnor runs right down to the roundabout at St Mary's Road. Lived in the area all my life and it's only in the last 20 years that some mistake the area as Baffins. Likewise some mistake the Prison area as being in Milton - it isn't it's still Copnor. Baffins Road is in Copnor. So just in case anyone still isn't quite sure, The Prison, Baffins Road, Milton Rd (North of St Mary's Rd roundabout) and Copnor bridge are all in COPNOR named after the ancient farm area of Copenore. Baffins is the pond (named after the farm that occupied the land the pond stands on) and has given its name to the political constituency of the area. The area has mistakenly become known as Baffins since, but in truth it's Copnor leading to Great Salterns as you head towards Portsea Island's east coast. Local History and Geography lesson endeth here! :-)
