Get your free flu jab before it's too late
Fresh calls are being made for elderly people and those at risk to get their flu jab – before it is too late.
Despite rates of the virus being low so far this year, health experts fear thousands of people are still in danger of contracting flu because they have not yet been vaccinated.
Over-65s and people considered at risk, such as those with diabetes, stroke survivors and patients with heart and chest conditions such as asthma, qualify for a free jab on the NHS.
People with liver disease, multiple sclerosis or other degenerative conditions of the central nervous system may also be advised to get vaccinated by their GP.
The virus can lead to complications such as bronchitis, pneumonia or even death.
Dawn Saunders, public health consultant for Portsmouth City Teaching Primary Care Trust, said: 'We would encourage people to go and get their flu jabs sorted as soon as possible.
'The flu vaccine we use does not contain any live virus, so cannot cause flu. But you do need a jab every year to protect yourself against new strains of the virus.'
